Willie Nelson reveals why he continues to tour at age 90
Willie Nelson has been captivating audiences for nearly six decades and shows no signs of stopping.
As he approaches his 90th birthday, the legendary musician is as dedicated as ever to his craft, continuously producing top-notch music and ensuring his numerous fans have the chance to experience his live performances.
Nelson, who embarked on his significant music career by signing with Liberty Records in 1962, is gearing up to celebrate this special birthday on tour. In a conversation with AARP, he mentioned that although he doesn’t need to work, doing so benefits him greatly.
“Working is really beneficial for me, regardless of the type of performance,” he remarked.
He’s excited about the tour, especially since he’ll be joined by many close friends. “The fact that I’ll be there for two days with many of my good friends…coming over to greet and sing with me makes it incredibly enjoyable. I’m eagerly anticipating it.”
This trend of esteemed artists continuing their craft well into their later years isn’t entirely new – icons like Dick Van Dyke (97), Michael Caine (89), and David Attenborough (96) serve as examples. However, there’s a distinct difference between taking on roles in film or television and the physical and emotional demands of live music tours.
Despite the challenges, Nelson keeps scheduling performances and delivering unforgettable experiences, an impressive feat as he nears his 90th year.
