Phil Collins’ Epic Comeback: Drumming Again After 10 Years, Reviving Legendary Vibes!

Phil Collins has been facing a tough period recently, dealing with various health issues that have hindered the legendary creator of “In The Air Tonight” from performing or even playing his renowned drums. Nevertheless, Collins recently experienced the joy of playing his iconic Gretsch tom kit once more for the first time in over a decade, featured in a new video by Drumeo.

The 73-year-old star of Genesis has been contending with his physical well-being since around 2007, following a severe spinal injury. This injury has led to a condition called drop foot, which complicates lifting the front part of the foot. Additionally, he suffers from chronic neck pain, a common ailment among drummers. These health challenges have naturally made drumming a difficult endeavor for him.

Phil Collins Briefly Tries Out His Vintage Drum Kit in New Drumeo Documentary

Drumeo interviewed Collins for their latest documentary, Phil Collins: Drummer First. The documentary explores Collins’ legacy as one of the most iconic drummers of his time and candidly discusses his physical limitations and how he has managed them. A significant portion of the film features Collins alongside his musically talented son, Nic Collins, who is the drummer for Better Strangers.

Drumeo shared a clip from the documentary showing Nic Collins and Drumeo host Brandon Toews working together to assemble Collins’ long-unused drum kit. This kit is well-known for being the one Collins used during Genesis’ legendary 1992 We Can’t Dance Tour.

Once assembled, Nic takes the first turn to play the kit. He performs admirably, even executing the famous drum fill from Collins’ 1981 hit “In The Air Tonight.” It’s important to note, however, that this drum kit is not the one Collins used during the original recording of the song.

In the video, Nic observes that the drum setup required his father to lean forward to play effectively. He speculates that this positioning contributed to Collins’ poor posture and subsequent neck pain in his later years.

Towards the end of the clip, Collins approaches his old drum kit and sits behind it. He taps the drums a few times before declaring, “That’s enough of that,” and stands up.
