What could be better than a legend of country music? The song is about other country music icons, performed by a country music great. “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes” by George Jones is a tribute to the greats such as Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, Roy Acuff, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Charlie Rich, Hank Williams, Marty Robbins, and Lefty Frizzell, and it asks who will fill their shoes when they are no longer alive. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash.
Writing credits go to Troy Seals and Max D. Barnes for the song, which was released as the first single and title track from the album Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes in 2013. The song reached the third position on the Billboard Hot Country Singles list.
Jones revealed this in his Golden Hits documentary from 1994 “… Troy Seals wrote that… Songwriters were bringing things in, and we were listening to songs and tapes, when Troy came in and told Billy [Sherrill, the producer] and me that he had this idea, and he even sang a little bit of the chorus for us… The following morning, before we went in to perform our session at two o’clock, he came back about ten or eleven o’clock with everything completed, and we were really exhausted from the experience.“
